Obituary for
Margaret Schneider "Peggy" Voight
Margaret S. Voight, 82, a resident of, East Boohbay, Maine and active community member died Saturday, January 8, 2011 at her residence after a period of failing health, with her family at her side.
She was born April 10, 1928 in New York City, the daughter of Harold and Margaret Grant Schneider, grew up in Scarsdale, NY, attending local schools there, and is a graduate of Barnard College at Columbia University.
In 1953 she married Leonard M. Voight, and his position with Standard Oil moved them to Venezuela. While living there, Margaret began her long career in Journalism.
Returning to Hartsdale NY in 1959, she began writing for the Reporter Dispatch in 1964, from 1973 to 1978 served as editor in charge of story placement and page layout, and from 1978 to 1990 was associated with the Review Press, where she became managing editor, her work helped garner more than 100 state and national awards for her paper, including an investigative piece on a fatal fire, that led to the passage of a New York State law requiring smoke detectors in all condominiums and cooperative apartments.
Soon after retiring in 1990, she moved to East Boothbay, where she became active in local affairs. She continued her work as a freelance writer, contributing to the Boothbay Register, and was instrumental in reviving the Boothbay Land Trust newsletter, upgrading it to a glossy multipage magazine with color photos. She also became an avid photographer, and contributed many photographs to her literary endeavors in Maine. Most recently, she was one of the crew who helped put together the 2010 Land Trust Trail Guide. She also was a passionate organizer of the Boothbay Boat builders Festival in East Boothbay.
She is predeceased by her husband Leonard Mark Voight, and a step sister Leslie Bigelow.
Survivors include her sons Paul R. Voight and his wife Barbara of Pine Bush, NY,
And Mark “Tiny” Voight of Boothbay Harbor,
A grandson Ryan Voight and his wife Desiree of American Forks, Utah,
A brother Harold Schneider and his companion Doris Mills of Columbia NJ,
4 nephews and 3 nieces.
A celebration of Margaret’s life will be held at 10 :00 AM Saturday, January 29, 2011 at St. Columba’s Episcopal Church, Emery Lane, Boothbay Harbor.
