Obituary for Alan B. Simmons

Alan B. Simmons
Alan B. “Curly” Simmons, 80, of Friendship, passed away peacefully July 17, 2015 at the Sussman House in Rockport.
Alan was born March 6, 1935 to Alice and Lester Simmons of Friendship. He attended primary school in Friendship where he lived his entire life with the exception of the last two years with his daughter in Damariscotta. He spent his childhood on Benner and Allen’s Island until 1952 when he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served from September 3, 1952 until he was honorably discharged February 27, 1956.
After his service, Alan performed many jobs. He started at Pratt and Whitney, based out of Connecticut, building jet engines which he worked at from July, 1956 through March, 1958. In 1958, Alan purchased a lobster boat and began fishing on his own. In his later years, after selling his lobster boat, he did numerous things such as painting buoys, knitting heads for lobster traps, picking crab meat, and pumping gas on the wharf for boats.
In 1957 Alan married the love of his life, Patricia M. Haskell of Cushing. They spent a wonderful 56 years together, until she passed away in October, 2013. They enjoyed dancing, snowmobiling, camping, and playing cribbage and card games. He got great pleasure from being around his family and many close friends. Alan was well known and loved by many.
Alan was predeceased by: his wife Patricia Simmons; parents Alice and Lester Simmons; brother Bernard Simmons; and sister Esther Carter. He is survived by: his daughters Angela (Barry Knott) Powell of Damariscotta and Sheila Ackley of Warren; grandchildren Gregory Powell of Friendship, Rebecca (Travis) Flaherty of Warren, Samantha Ackley of Cambridge, Maryland, and Stephen Ackley of Warren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Alan’s family would like to thank Betsy, his Hospice nurse from the Kno-Wal-Lin and the staff at the Sussman House for their loving care in their time of need. They also wish to send out a very special thank you to his life-long friends Philip and Sandra Sukeforth and their family for all their love, support and kindness throughout Alan and Pat’s lives and especially through the last couple years.
Visitation will take place from 1:00 - 3:00 PM followed by a memorial service at 3:00 PM on Saturday, July 25, 2015 at Hall Funeral Home of Waldoboro.
Hall’s of Waldoboro has care of the arrangements. To extend online condolences, light a candle in Alan’s memory, or to share a story or picture, please visit his Book of Memories at www.hallfuneralhomes.com
