Nancy Butler Wilson, 87, died peacefully on the morning of Sept. 21 at Cove’s Edge in Damariscotta. The daughter of Roland and Dorothy O. Butler, she was born in Dearborn, Mich. on March 11, 1927.
After she earned her BA in English at the University of Massachusetts, Boston and MA in English at Simmons, she taught at Duxbury High School in Massachusetts, Boothbay High School, and the University of Maine at Farmington.
She lived for many years in her Yurt (a small round house) in the woods of North New Portland. This is where she spent a lot of her time pursuing her passion – writing. She moved to the Back House in Bremen 35 years ago to help take care of her aging mother.
Her many writing accomplishments include one book, “I Sleep Around” under the nom de plume Nadia Bernard; a libretto – “Beowulf” which was performed at the Waldo Theatre; and many poems and articles. She penned the column “Back Talk from the Back House” which appeared weekly in The Lincoln County News.
She was a member of the Maine Media Women. She also played the cello for many years, including playing with the Maine Mid-Coast Symphony Orchestra. One of her life’s highlights was visiting Pablo Casals in Puerto Rico back in 1970s. She participated in the local “Hearts Ever Young” performances. She was also a member of the Bremen Patriotic Club.
She trained her dog Sam and he became a certified therapy dog. She visited many places with Sam, including Cove’s Edge, where his happy spirit was enjoyed by all.
Throughout the years she loved sailing, learned navigation, salt water swimming and fishing, downhill and cross country skiing, and backpacking and hiking in the mountains.
