This is a picture of Mom's paternal grandmother, Evelyn Dernier Burditt, in her 50s. Mom was thought to bear a striking resemblance to "Grammie Burditt." I agree! (JP)

I remember Nat from when I was small, when I visited my Uncle Walter's house--she was always so lively and exuberant; any many years later, she made Walter very happy after they married. Her exuberance and love of life were always on display, whenever we had occasion to visit with them. She had a rough time in these most recent years, but has left an unforgettable memory of her life and the joy she gave to others. I am writing to you almost two weeks after your death on Jan. 20, 2013. In some way that I do not understand, I believe you will receive my message and smile. We were married in May of 1996 as Christians and received God’s blessing on our union. I was 73 years old then and you were not too far behind at 67. When I was very young and thought about the adults in my life, I pictured them as being old. Consider that our Social Security system became law during our childhood and was activated at age 65. After a wonderfully active honey-moon in Scotland and England (do you remember the Chelsea Flower Show?) we returned home and before our first anniversary had included our sloop Sea Star in our family. We, with your enthusiastic support, had plans in place to cruise along the east coast of our country and we did several times. We traveled to Greece and cruised the Aegean Sea, checked out Mexico, Atlantic Canada, and the Caribbean. By RV we were able to keep in touch with family and friends scattered throughout the USA. We apparently had not heard the story about getting old. All the while your adventurous spirit was front and center, always ready for our next challenge. I’m hard pressed to come up with a conversation or situation in our life together which evoked anger or regrettable words. Even after Alzheimer’s disease had put you in another world, our conversations together at the Gregory Wing of St. Andrews Village often and always included a whispered “I love you”. That is as true today as it was then –“I love you”- Scotty

It is hard to put into words how much mom meant to all of us and me as well. She was a forever breath of fresh air; kind, energetic, creative and fun. I was so proud that she was able to re-invent herself from house-wife to sales rep, and to find happiness in a second marriage to Scotty. We so looked forward to the many visits she made to us while on the road. I honestly do not believe it possible that a son could ask for a better mom. We will reunite again, for that is the cycle of life. The beauty which is in the hearts of those in our family is ultimately the energy which binds us together, and that is eternal.It is an honor to have been born into the company of so many good people and to share the collective memories we all share. -ap

Mom loved an adventure, and when we were growing up, she had a book called "Away We Go", with suggestions for day trips around the New York City area. We went to Sterling Forest Garden and Bear Mountain along the Hudson River, to Jones Beach on Long Island, to the Edison home in New Jersey and Valley Forge. I can't REMEMBER all the places we went on our weekend jaunts! But it was always fun. One summer when we were up in Maine and having a very long spell of foggy weather, Mom decided we should go visit a Penobscot Indian village. I don't think she had a very clear idea of how far away it was or how long it would take to get there. It turned out to be a VERY long drive indeed, through rain and nasty weather; when we finally arrived at the so-called "Indian village", it was a sad, dilapidated place with a large concrete "tepee", at the entrance, a "trading post" (selling tourist trinkets) and probably the remaining two Penobscot Indians in the whole state of Maine. I'm sure Dad was NOT amused at the time, but we all got many laughs out of it afterwards.
