John Norton was one of the kindest men I have ever known. He and Caroline had an outstanding marriage. "Johnny", as I fondly recall, set an example of humble excellence that is remarkabe in this day and age, perhaps because he was the product of a wonderful generation of men -- such as his brother-in-law, Twid Hemingway, who knew no other way to live but being a gentleman in every respect. My conratulations -- not condolences -- to John's progeny because of his witness in this life.

What a love story - to see John and Caroline together was to see a measure of affection, understanding, and mutual respect rarely seen in this hurried world. Jeff sent me a photo of the reworked headstone and it reminded me of all the family connections between Jeff's family and mine and others. David John Kolarik was born on Feb. 16, 2008 which was his great Uncle Tuck's birthday in 1946. Our niece Phoebe Boynton was born on Johnny Norton's birthday (Aug. 21). Our nephew Will Graeper was born on my step mother Margaret's birthday (July 27), Hannah Graeper was born on my step father's birthday (Oct 21st??) Elizabeth Caroline Kolarikova was born on her Uncle Chuck Peter's birthday (October 17 - Aunt Ellen's husband). There are so many mysteries in life that we do not count as coincidence but as God's providence. He knows our names and he knows every tear that falls. We are so thankful for our extended families and the connections God makes between us all.

I knew John Norton during the 1980s and early 1990s when we fished together in Long Island Sound off the coast of Madison, CT. John was a bit older, and we were both solitary fisherman, enjoying sunrise and sunset alone, each aware of waves, whistling of tight lines in coastal winds, and the sky and sea in its many changing colors and patterns. Somehow we became close friends and came to enjoy fishing together. We fished the September and October months of gray seas and early sunsets. One October day with rough seas at Six Mile Reef, John hooked into a 12 pound (+/-) blue. He played it well to the bow to my position. I wrapped my hand around the steel leader to hoist the fish into the boat, but John's rusty leader broke and cut my fingers to the bone. John was upset that I had lost his fish. He suggested that if I clean my wounds in the cold saltwater, it would be the equivalent of "chuming" and he could continue fishing. In retrospect, I am glad I kept duck hunting a solitary experience! When my first child was born, John gave me a special gift. He painted a seascape of two men in a small craft with the coastline beyond. The painting still hangs in our dining room (see photo). I was privileged to have John as a companion and friend. My sincerest condolences to all of John's family and many friends.

Uncle Johnny was the sweetest man. He always had a big smile on his face, and was sure to chuckle about something, no matter what the topic. You always felt better when you were around him. I have two stories that come to mind when I think of my uncle Johnny. When I was 10 or 11, I was playing spotlight with my many cousins, while the adults were chatting on the porch after dinner. A group of us kids swore we saw a bear running across the lawn (probably a shadow, but you know how dramatic kids are), so we went running and screaming to tell our parents. Basically, they all looked at us like we were crazy, except for Uncle Johnny. He listened to our story carefully, then stood up and said, "Wait here while I go get my gun and check this out," and he did. He was our hero that night! My other favorite story is the time he traveled with my dad and I to see Turner's watercolors at the Yale Museum of British Art. At the time, Uncle Johnny and I were both into painting, so we went to the Prints and Drawing room to view Turner's work. After looking at a few of the watercolors, Uncle Johnny said to the girl who was helping us, with a completely straight face, "Do you have any of John Norton's works?" The look on her face was priceless, and Dad, Uncle Johnny and I preceded to burst out laughing. What a fun day....

When I think of John, the first thing that comes to my mind was his beaming smile. Even during times of adversity, and in the last five or six years there had been a few, he was always able to find something to smile or laugh about. His smile and laughter were a gift…you just felt good when you were around him. And didn’t John love to laugh! I cannot think of anyone else I would rather tell a joke to; with John, you just knew you’d get a good laugh. And when John himself told a joke, he often started laughing well before the joke began and at many points before the punch line. Sometimes, in fact, his own laughing would even drown out the punch line! I won’t go into the type of humor that most got John laughing, but the last meal I shared with John featured baked beans. And, yes, on that Saturday before he left us, we all shared many good laughs, even when he found out they had run out of chocolate ice cream. I’m going to miss his smile.

To Jeff and other family members. Marty and I only met your Dad recently at your mother's funeral service. Our hearts go out to you during this time of loss but it makes it easier knowing your loved one is in heaven and you will see them again at the rapture or before for those who have accepted Jesus into their hearts have had their sins washed away and their names are written into the Book of Life. What a Glorious Day that will be when we see Jesus face to face in all of His Glory as well as our loved ones who have gone on before. We pray that your hearts and minds will be comforted, that you will feel the peace that surpasses all understanding as you share this time of loss together. Gramps called me "Laura-belle" or "Lodie-belle" and I loved it. Gramps was such a super grandfather. He'd tease Grammy and tell us just-slightly-less-than-appropriate jokes, to which Grammy would say, "Johnnnnnyyyyyy." or she would say sarcastically, "Ha ha ha, isn't he funny." Ha ha ha - they were a picture of the "Television couple." It was so fun to be around them. We would play games together every night - rummikub, or cribbage (he usually played that with Jack - i never really "got" that game), or checkers. He didn't have the silly idea that he should boost our "self-esteem". He's just whoop us. Or Grammy would whoop him. One of the hardest moments was a few years ago, when Grammy forgot the rules, and couldn't play anymore... :( Gramps taught us how to play croquet in the backyard. He gingerly whooped us in that game too. He'd send our balls out into the blueberry fields and laugh and laugh. Never the less, croquet was always better with Gramps. Gramps and Mattie had a very special relationship - Matt was the littlest, and could fit on Gramps' lap. They'd rock and rock, watching tennis on that little TV together. I loved it when Gramps told stories about his history. But you really had to draw it out of him... i don't think it was because he didn't like to talk, but i think it was honest humility. He wasn't all about himself, and making sure everyone knew he was a hero - but he was a hero. Especially to us. Gramps, I'll see you soon...

Johnny always loved black labs and in 2001 our family bought a beautiful puppy we named "Cerna" which means black in Czech language. Our daughter lives in Czech Republic with her Czech husband and three children now and that is why the dog was named Cerna. Mainers always put an "er" at the end of a word that ends in letter "a" so our dog got renamed "Cerner" when John and Caroline moved to Chase Point and the dog became a regular visitor. Of course the dog wanted to spend the night right by Johnny's bed but because of the rules of their apartment, he came and went every day we could get him over there. Because he was always hungry like any black lab, and he had very convincing eyes, he started putting on the pounds eating graham crackers, candies and cookies that were meant for Gramps and Grammy. We started bringing over dog biscuits and dog food and that is what kept the dog happy for a good part of the day. Our three year old grandson David remembers feeding Cerna biscuits when he came for Grammy's funeral. Cerner has been a good dog for Jeff and I and a good companion for Caroline and John. When our little grandson heard that his great grandfather had died he asked, "Who is going to feed Cerna his dog biscuits???". And to quote Ethel Leman who was a caregiver for John this year, "Mr. Cerner will miss him something awful".

My mother and father from my husband Jeff, gave me an example to follow in marriage similar to the Canadian Geese who mate for life: they stayed together through thick and thin. Johnny at 93 hung on to help take care of Totchie (his younger bride) and I loved walking into their apartment to see them sitting close together, holding hands. He always called her "mom" because she took care of their own children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and others. Grammy and Gramps were inseparable and only parted at her death. As Jeff and I came to understand that each parent truly believed that it was Jesus Christ who died for them, we now believe that they can be together in heaven, forgiven and loved by their Savior, forever. My husband and I are so thankful for the past 11 years when we have been able to spend more time with them in Maine and we too look forward to our family reunion with Jesus and John and Caroline and so many others who have gone before us.

Okay. I remember black labs in kennels in Wallingford. I remember Tucker. And Jeff, and Ellen, and Paul. I remember a home with kitchen smells and a cobbler's bench for a coffee table. All this is because John loved his wife and made a family with open arms that sometimes included me. So John Norton, good job! You had a chuckle that I can still hear, especially when you said to my parents at the moment my father moved his career to Chicago sending all of us to college and boarding schools,"gee Jack, you sure shook the nest!" And that infamous chuckle followed. My lesson records that John Hall Norton and his loving wife took the time to heal and deal. Bless the man. In enduring respect and joy, JBW

I sure loved your Dad, my beloved Uncle Johnny. It has been a long, long time since he smoked a pipe (to my knowledge, anyway! :), but I can still smell the sweet smell of his pipe tobacco, as I came in the door of the Mapleview Road house. He was a wonderful man, always a smile on his face. I'm sorry for your loss but happy for him to be with Caroline again. They were not apart for very long.
