Obituary for Florine P. Bryant
Florine P. Bryant, 95, also known as “Possy”, passed away at the Knox Center for Long Term Care in Rockland on November 10, 2019. Florine was born in Thomaston, Maine on August 24, 1924. She was the daughter of Fred Burnham and Eula Collamore Burnham.
She was a graduate of Thomaston High School, Class of 1942 and later from Rockland Business College. In high school she loved softball and was on the championship team and also played basketball. She was an ace pitcher and her dear friend Maxine was the catcher. (Pitcher and catch are now reunited!).
During World War II years she was one of the first women to work in a ship yard in Camden. She was at one time employed by Perry’s Market in Rockland (both in the Main Street store and in the Park Street store) and by Rockland Wholesale Grocery Co. in Rockland. She was also employed by Rockland Savings & Loan Association for 25 years and was last employed by the Department of Human Services in Rockland, Maine.
In 1955 Florine was the first female town clerk to be elected in Thomaston. She was also a certified Red Cross instructor. Florine had served on the Thomaston cemetery committee from 1991 to 1995; on the July 4th committee as Treasurer; ballot clerk for over 25 years; she was a member and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary and was a member of the Down East Singers. She was a member of the RB club which consisted of a group of young moms who met once a month or so for coffee, gabbing and fun.
She dearly loved Thomaston and “her street”, Beechwood and her cozy little house at 31, where she lived all of her life with the exception of past couple of years. She knew so much about Thomaston’s past and could speak about it and its characters eloquently even when her memory was fading. She and her friends joined in the 4th of July parade, creating costumes for the comical floats they concocted – and most always winning a prize.
Florine had a love of history; she read and studied all she could find on the Civil War, FDR’s days, World War I and World War II. She loved all political matters.
She was a gifted artist, (even though she thought she wasn’t any good at it) and she loved music especially singing harmony – alto and tenor. She sang with the Down East Singers, also sang with the ladies barber shop singers and several Christmas cantatas held at the Thomaston Baptist Church.

Florine was predeceased by her parents, her son, Daniel Judson Bryant, her sister Pauline Burnham Wotton and nephew Robert Simpson Wotton.
She is survived by her daughter Jean B. Chadwick and husband Richard, daughter-in-law Diane Kinney Bryant; grandchildren, Lynn Chadwick Farrin and husband Wayne, Jon Chadwick and wife Heather, Kevin A. Bryant and wife Junko, Kelly M. Bryant and husband Todd Dubnicoff; great grandchildren, Caleb Farrin, Abigail Farrin, Brian Chadwick, Channing Chadwick, Brandon Soper, Kelsey Court and husband Kevin, Hana Bryant, Emi Bryant, Ezra Dubnicoff, Silas Dubnicoff; great-great grandchildren, Blake Chadwick, Alyse Court, and Aubrey Court as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A private graveside service will be held at the Village Cemetery in Thomaston.
