Gordon A. Benner, 85, passed away peacefully at Quarry Hill in Camden, ME. on the evening of June 18, 2019 with the comfort of his family by his side. Gordon was born on October 27th, 1933 in Rockland, ME to Hazel Teele Genthner.

Gordon grew up in Bremen and Round Pond, attended Bristol schools and graduated from Bristol High School in 1953. After graduation Gordon entered the U.S. Army working as a helicopter mechanic during the Korean War.

Gordon was a school bus driver for many years, owned Benner Bros. and Leeman Construction, and built, owned, and operated the first car wash in Damariscotta on the Biscay Road. Gordon chaired the Bristol Parks Commission for almost 15 years, where he took great pride in working on many projects big and small; the Education Center at Pemaquid Point, the Ellingwood Park Information Center in Bristol Mills, and with help from his wife, Betty, developed the flower beds at Pemaquid Point Lighthouse Park.

Gordon was a devoted member of the Order of The Eastern Star which he served as the Worthy Grand Patron and member of the Bristol Masonic Lodge for over 50 years. Gordon was also a member of the Shriners and the American Legion of Damariscotta. Gordon also enjoyed being a member of the Maine Obsolete Auto League. Gordon and Betty enjoyed driving their motor home all over the United States visiting various O.E.S. Chapters, whose members they thought of as their second family.

Gordon was one very special person. I so wish I could be with his family and friends today.

Whenever I supplied the Damariscotta Church on a Sunday morning, I would look to see if Gordon were there. And he was present on most Sundays when he was able to do so. His warm smile and kind and caring ways were so very powerful and radiated a sense of peace & contentment. I always felt a very special connection to Gordon and loved to chat with him. Bringing his granddaughter with him to church on numerous Sundays just underscored the very special sort of person that he was.

I think it was John Claypool who coined the phrase "his balcony people." By that he meant people in his congregation who had died and who had became part of the communion of saints who continued to cheer him on. And when he conducted worship and looked up into the balcony he could sense some of those people sitting there and giving him courage and inspiration to proclaim the love & justice of God. Gordon was that for me. And he has now become one of my balcony people.

To his family and friends, I can only say that you have been blessed by having a very extraordinary person in your lives. His presence and influence must have left a very positive mark among you. And we send our thoughts and prayers to sustain you in this time of loss in the coming days and weeks.

Peace, grace & love,

Bob Dent
