Obituary for Christine E. Wellman

Christine E. Wellman, 93, went to be with her Lord and Savior with her family by her side at Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast on April 14, 2019. Christine was born on May 26, 1925 in North Union the daughter of the late Oscar F. Upham and Almacia Wellman.

Christine grew up locally and was a graduate of Union High School, class of 1943. After graduation she married William S. Orne, Sr. and moved to Monhegan. Christine worked at the Inn on the island as a chambermaid. She always loved Monhegan, the beauty it held and meeting new artists, including Alice Stoddard. After the death of her husband William in 1959, Christine and her sons, Mike and Billy, moved to Stickney’s Corner. On May 24, 1963 she married Estern Wellman and they moved to the house in West Washington next to his parents’ home. In 1970 they had their first boarding home for veterans all from Togus. In 1975 they built another house but continued to run the boarding home until retirement.

Christine loved to cook. She would always cook her famous chicken casserole for the church and family gatherings. She loved going to lawn sales and playing beano. Being a devout Christian, she took pleasure reading her bible and being a witness to people. She was smart, very artistic; she always kept up on the local news and current events. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family

Christine was a member of the South Liberty Baptist Church and the Somerville Baptist Church.

She was predeceased by her husbands, William Orne, Sr. and Estern Wellman, her son Billy Orne, and siblings, Athlene, Oscar, Beverly, John, Juanita, Reginald and Wayne.

Christine is survived by her son, Mike Orne and wife Dale of Friendship, her daughter, Ellen Jorgenson and husband Brian of Alameda, CA, step-daughters, Esther Weaver, her husband Duane and family, and Elaine Brann, her husband Ronald and family, 9 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, siblings, Jeanette Grinnell and husband Gordon of Boothbay, Mildred Brooks of Union, Shirley Berry and husband Vern of Union, Rebecca Ripley of Rockport, Sally Smith and husband Bob of Jefferson, special niece Naomi Kirkpatrick and husband Kevin, special neighbors, Ruth Bowman and family and Alice Bowman and family, along with many other nieces, nephews and cousins.

Special thanks to Peter Brooks for all of his special care, and to Brian Ritchie for his many visits, and to the staff at Harbor Hill for the wonderful care given, and special thanks to the staff at Waldo County General Hospital.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Friday, May 24, 2019 from 5-7 p.m. at Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main Street, in Waldoboro. A memorial service for Christine will be held on Saturday, May 25, 2019 at 2 o’clock in the afternoon at Hall Funeral Home 949 Main Street, Waldoboro with Pastor Brian Ritchie officiating.
