I was only 4 years old when she moved to Wadsworth Street in Maine. My family used to visit just about every summer when I was young. Those are some of the happiest memories of my life. She would bake fresh blueberry pies and homemade bread. I can still remember how wonderful the house smelled while she was baking. We used to go to Rockport to see Andre the seal. We took trips up and down the coast of Maine. I remember playing games and doing puzzles and reading with my grandmother. She was a lot of fun. I am glad that I moved to Massachusetts in the late 1990s so that I could spend more time with her. We always had fun taking road trips and just hanging out and talking. I miss you Grandma. The world just isn't the same without you.

My grandmother (Luthera) and I took a fun road trip from Thomaston to Orono in the fall of 2001. We stopped by Mount Battie to check out the beautiful view.

I came to know Luthera through her daughter-in-law, Alice Phalen. It has been a privilege and honor to have counted Luthera as one of my dearest friends. She was, as anyone who met her knows, a person of such gentleness, humor, wit, and compassion that the world was truly enriched by her presence. She has become my model for the humanity that might just save this world. Vaya con Dios, dear one.

Luthera was a woman of courage, wit, and deep intelligence. She touched many lives during her long and productive time with us. Her presence will continue to be felt. And I will continue, also, to make the cinnamon raisin bread that she taught me.

Luthera Burton Dawson at 100 sounds like she was a great woman who was ahead of her time and very accomplished. Her obituary in the Portland Press Herald interested me. My name is Mary Burton and my Burton relatives all left Sprucehead, St. George area and moved to the Portland area, where I currently am. I would love to meet with some of the relatives since I'm on a search for my roots. In the 1980's a cousin in Sprucehead said I had a relative from the Revolutionary War that was buried not far away in the Burton Cemetery of Sprucehead or in the woods. Thinking of all of you who loved Luthera as we did. We will attend the funeral and burial in spirit, and although we are grieving we do not say, "She is no more," we instead remember with thanks, "She was."

As many of you know, Luthera wrote to me in 2003 at the University of Maryland, volunteering to participate in an age studies doctoral project I was conducting. We were friends from that time on. I officially interviewed Luthera over four years about how she experienced aging, with attention to her cultural traditions, especially being a Mainer, and how this influenced her late life. We had fun together, making Indian Pudding in her kitchen, which we enhanced, at her insistence, with ginger ice cream from Dorman's. We ate it while watching videos I brought to her Wadsworth home, where I alone, then my husband and I together, stayed several times. Luthera and I watched Anne of Green Gables and Road From Coorain. Among many other things, Luthera taught me how to fall when you are in your 90s, how to take out trash unassisted, how to use a quad cane, how to chose good hearing aids, how to stay positive and busy. She and I baked Anadama bread together, and she later showed how, if you can't knead bread with two hands, use one. I was 74 when I received my doctorate last year, so it won't be too long before I put lessons Luthera taught me to good use. I visited with Luthera four times this past April and talked to her on her birthday by phone through the kindness of her son Keith. I will miss Luthera terribly but feel her presence which I will carry with me always. I was blessed to know Luthera. Her greatest gift to me was to call me "Sis."
