Uncle Lloyd was the greatest. His loving and caring ways made him easy to talk with and share with. I will always remember and love Uncle Lloyd. God sure has a special angel in Lloyd.

I have one more memory which tells a lot about Lloyd's character and which taught me yet another lesson. He and I were out fishing on Sunset Pond, the two of us, and on one of my casting attempts I hooked his head! Yes, the barbed hook was actually embedded in his scalp! I was horrified, as you might imagine. My emotions tend to bubble over more than they should. Lloyd was very calm and understanding. He could have been angry or responded in some other negative way to me. Certainly, that would have been MY first comeback to such a situation. We went into shore, up to the house and somebody cut the hook out of his head. There must have been a little blood, but he never complained and he never brought up that incident again, in the many years that followed. I am the type that must constantly catch myself from bringing up an unpleasant past event. Reminding myself of Lloyd's reaction and subsequent behavior helps me to act better towards my loved ones, even if they don't recognize it!

There are many things that I could write about Lloyd, my father-in-law. Honestly, as I age myself, I find that many past events and conversations fade from my memory, which is probably a good thing. One thing that Lloyd said to me, however, will likely NEVER be erased from my mind. Something had happened between Amy and I, an argument of some kind. All of you married people know what I'm talking about, it was the kind of thing where just a short while later you can't remember what the commotion was all about. Anyway, Lloyd's comment was to the point, 100% accurate, and remains one of the most important guiding principles of my life today. His comment was, "You've got a lot to learn!". Truer words were never spoken. Thank you, Lloyd. I realize that I wouldn't be the person that I am today without you having been there before me.

This was a wonderful party. The weather was wonderful and Dorothy and Lloyd were so thrilled with everyone who came. It was sad that they were leaving Ohio but it was also the right time for them to go to Maine. Amy and Russ were very excited to have them but I really hated for them to go. I meet Dot and Lloyd when they bought the house they lived in Ohio. We were neighbors to them and became a part of the family. Mike and I had a lot of fun times with them....lots of drinks on the porch and in her favorite wing. Lloyd was always so happy and taking pictures of the sun sets at the house. Plus, feeding the birds. We have been blessed to know Lloyd and Dot. Lloyd we will see you in the next life..and I bet it will be looking at the perfect sun set. Love you all Mike and Marilyn

Uncle Lloyd was a special caring person to my mother and our family. Van was Dorothy's sister and a widower. They would visit her nearly every day and make sure she was OK. Lloyd would do little fix-its for her house. Together he and Dorothy made sure she stayed active and went out often. This is true love and caring from her little sister and Lloyd. Nothing compares to their giving of themselves and we are forever humbled and grateful for their kindness.

...I joined my parents who had moved to New Concord. Within a week or two, I suddenly noticed an attractive girl walk along the side of the next door neighbors house. We both said hello and exchanged a few polite words. When she came back later with a piece of pie, we talked a somewhat longer time. I can still hear her voice 60 years later - we now have 4 children and 6 grandchildren.

...US Forces invaded the Japanese occupied island of Okinawa, so we were fairly sure we would get involved in that operation. Early in the battle for Okinawa, the Japs threw their hundreds of suicide bombers at US ships that were anywhere near. Our ship would have made a good target...Our ship did not hurry to get to Okinawa...While on Okinawa, we were assigned to Kimpo Airfield near Seoul, S Korea. While waiting for transportation to Korea, we experienced a typhoon of considerable strength. Our basic tactic was to tear down our 4-man tents, put heavy stuff on the canvas to hold it down and crawl in some suitable spot under the canvass to listen to the wind blow the whole night.

...in Dec, 4 to get into the Navy flight training program and had failed the eye test, so I knew that was out for me. After a couple weeks, I and a few remaining meteorologist training soldiers were told our destination was a 5 month training school at Yale University where we would learn to be qualified communication officers, ie., we would learn about the radio communication equipment used by the air force...later I learned that I was to take another training course in Georgia. I learned much about the Instrument Landing System used by the Air Force to guide aircraft into landing in poor visibility. ILS is stiil in use today.

...on a farm that had common ground with a nearby town (Stanton, KY) for 9 years, age 7-16. These were good years. I had close friends an a horse I could ride. The town boys swam in the nearby river and we climbed the hillsides looking for nuts and berries. We also got an early start at playing basketball.

...in the early morning hours before dawn in the kitchen of a farmhouse not far from New Concord. My father had taken a horse and wagon to fetch our doctor. Our neighbor's wife, Clara Thompson had come in haste over the hill separating our houses to attend my mother at my birth. Mrs Thompson apparently was up to the task, because I am told I arrived before the doctor did. The date was 24 Feb, 1923. My parents were farmers and it was a time when it was extremely difficult to make a living at farming. I never remember going hungry, but we grew most of what we ate.
