Obituary for Alma "Millie" Mildred Abbott (Leach)

Print

Mildred Leach Abbott, lovingly known as “Millie” passed away peacefully at the age of 95 on Saturday, November 24. Millie was a resident of the Pines of Newmarket, NH. She moved there from Thomaston, Maine to be closer to her daughter Muriel Ingalls of Kingston, NH. Millie was born on May 3, 1923 in Tisdale, Saskatchewan, Canada. Her parents were the Rev. Hubert Leach and Nina Eva Carr Leach. Millie’s family moved to the United States and settled in Thomaston, Maine in 1929. She was seven years old and resided there through her childhood and adult years. She graduated from Thomaston High School in 1942. After graduation, she met and married Walter Abbott and they eventually settled at the family home on Lawrence Avenue.

Millie was known and loved by many of the children in the Thomaston schools as being one of the lunch ladies, a title she enjoyed for 23 years. Millie had always attended the Federated Church in Thomaston where her father was the pastor for 23 years. Millie loved music and sang in the choir for many years. She also participated in the community minstrel shows performed at the Watts Hall. She was active in the church and served in many capacities including Deaconess and the We Two Club.

Millie was predeceased by her parents, her husband of 69 years, her sister Olive Holbrook, and two sons -in-law David Ingalls and Darryl Leavitt. Left to cherish her memory are her brother, Edwin Leach of Hudson, MA, her three daughters, Muriel, Doreen Leavitt of Warren, Maine and Patricia Perry and her husband Eric of Thomaston. She is also survived by 5 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and friends in Maine and New Hampshire.

Millie’s family will celebrate her life with a graveside service on May 4th, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. where she will join her deceased family at the Village Cemetery, on Erin Street in Thomaston. Her life will also be celebrated at the Pines of Newmarket. Dates and times to be announced. She lived the last 4 years of her life at the Pines. She participated in all kinds of activities from exercise programs to word games and bingo. Her favorite days were when there was musical entertainment, holiday parties and visits from family and friends. The staff and residents at the Pines loved her passion for life and generous spirit. If you would like to make a donation in Millie’s memory, you may give to your local Hospice organization.
