Obituary for
Dr. Edgar T Gibson
Dr. Edgar T Gibson passed away July 16, 2017 at 102 years old. Born 3/23/1915 to Albert E and Mabel (Cave) Gibson, he married the late Helen Tomlinson in 1943.
A graduate of Villanova University (where he earned a varsity letter in football & tennis) and Jefferson Medical School, he went on to the Cleveland Clinic for his surgical residency program before enlisting in the US Army in 1943. He served in the closest MASH unit to Berlin when Germany surrendered and then stayed on in Germany for the following year. Upon return from Germany he began his medical practice in southern New Jersey serving both the Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Camden, NJ, and multiple divisions of West Jersey Hospital. He saved lives with skill & compassion. He served as Chief of Surgery at West Jersey Hospital and as President of the Camden County Medical Society.
Known for his small physical stature but large personality, Ed loved to tease & be teased. He was a past commodore of the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club where he spent many summers enjoying the Summer Cruises. He was a regular visitor at the Boothbay Region YMCA, exercising, playing tennis and serving on the Board. He also served on the Trustees Advisory Board of Bigelow Laboratories for Ocean Sciences.
Ed loved adventure and during his retirement years served as crew on 2 sailing trips across the Atlantic without navigational equipment. He traveled to many parts of the world, always returning with videos to share. Never giving into age he joined several buddies in the Camden, ME, toboggan race when he was 96 years old.
He is survived by his sister Alice Faries of Media, PA, daughters Ann Peluso and her husband Philip of Limerick, Maine, Dr. Barbara Gibson of Edgecomb, Maine, Helen Tucker and her husband David of Marcellus, New York, and Jeanne Gibson of Winthrop, Maine. In addition he will be missed by his grandsons Dan Tucker & his wife Katie and Alex Gibson and great grandson Zachary Tucker along with many nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his wife Helen Tomlinson Gibson, three brothers and two sisters.
If Ed were still here he would say that in lieu of flowers, please vote Republican. But his family suggests that memorial donations go to his favorite charity and gathering place, the Boothbay Region YMCA, 261 Townsend Ave, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04358.
A celebration of life will be Tuesday, July 25, 2017 from 5:00 to 7:00PM at Halls Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Rd, Boothbay, Maine. Hall’s of Boothbay has care of the arrangements. To extend online condolences, please visit hallfuneralhomes.com
