Obituary for George H. Ames Jr.

George H. Ames Jr.
George Herman Ames, Jr., 78, of Warren, passed away on April 26, 2016 after a courageous battle with cancer. George was born on February 2, 1938 in Washington, Maine, the son of George and Louise (Lincoln) Ames.

He attended Waldoboro High School and enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in 1955 and retired in 1978, as a chief machinery technician. During his time of service he was awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Coast Guard Sea Service Ribbon, the Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon and the Coast Guard Good Conduct Medal. Upon retirement with the United States Coast Guard, he worked at the Maine State Prison for 15 years as a guard and boiler room technician.

He married his beloved wife Carol Ann in 1960 and raised his two sons in Waldoboro. He was able to take his family with him when he was transferred by the United States Coast Guard to Kodiak, Alaska. Even though he was stationed at the Kodiak Fire Department and transferred to the United States Coast Guard Cutter “Storis”, he was able to go with his sons to catch good size crabs right off a dock and watched them fly fish for salmon.

Upon his return from Kodiak, he bought a home in Warren where he took pride in landscaping and maintaining his land on his John Deere lawn mower and working on his house. George was an avid New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox fan.

He loved his sons and grandchildren very much and would do anything he could to help them out.

George is survived by his wife of 56 years, Carol Ann, his son David B. Ames and wife Patricia of Wiscasset, and son Eric B. Ames of Warren; his brother Robert Ames and wife Dolores of Hummelstown, PA; a sister, Marjorie Goff of Milford, PA and a sister Linda Ames of Augusta; loving grandchildren Nicholas Ames and finance Lindsey of Boothbay, Adam Johns and companion Molly of Northport, and Allyson Ames of Warren. George especially, through the years, appreciated the close ties he had with his brother and sister-in-law Ronald and Anita Benner of Union.

At George’s request there will be no funeral service.

Friends are invited to share their memories, photos, stories with the Ames family by visiting their Book of Memory page at www.hallfuneralhomes.com. Arrangements are entrusted to Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro, Maine 04572.
