Condolences

Condolence From: William Neiber
Condolence: I wanted to leave my condolences with Dick's family. I met Dick while we were stationed At Carswell AFB in Fort Worth, Texas. Dick and I were both assigned to the 7th Organizational Maintenance Squadron as crew chiefs on B-52F aircraft until I received PCS orders to U-Tapao AB, Thailand reporting in January 1969. While at U-Tapao the Carswell AFB B-52s arrived along with their crews and maintenance personal. This is where Dick and I crossed paths again. Dick, Rest In Peace Bill Neiber.

Condolence: I was a friend of Dicks when we were stationed at Carswell AFB, and worked together in The 7th OMS as B-52F crew chiefs from 1966 to December 1969. I left Carswell when I received orders and left for U-Tapou AB, Thailand. I ran into Dick again when he deployed to Thailand with the the 7th Bomb Wing. I tried to locate Dick quite a few times, but was never successful. I was so sorry to read about his passing and want to extend my condolences to his family.

Condolence From: Thomas W Brown
Condolence: I remeber well the days on Natta Blvd. with Dick, Guy, Victor, and David playing baseball, creating jalopies, burning leaves, shooting the can cannon in the air, frolicing at the brook woods, climbing trees, giving Mitter Hazel a hard time, and being boys. Dick was a very good friend and I was deeply affected when I saw the notice on the internet of his passing. Anyone interested in re-coonecting or learning more about his boyhood is urged to contact me. My sincere condolences to you all.

Condolence From: David C. Grinnan
Condolence: I would like to extend my condolences to the Orne Family. I often think of these wonderful people when I reflect on my childhood in Boothbay Harbor, as Rich and I spent a great deal of time together as kids.
Your father was a special man. Allow him to live within you and embrace his teachings as you continue forward in this life.
Even though I am no longer in the area and we have not spoken in years, I want you to know that you have been in my thoughts during this difficult time. Stay strong and take care.

Condolence From: Guy Orne
Condolence: Dick and I were just under 12 months apart in age. We grew up in a small house in small town called Bellmore, on Long Island, New York. We had a couple of years to ourselves, then two more brothers, Victor and David came along. Several years after that, another brother and sister, Fred and Annette joined the family. Needless to say, space was at a premium. Dick and I grew up sharing the same bedroom. We fought hard and we played hard. Our personalities and interests were very different:

- He was born on the East Coast...I was born on the West Coast

- He liked to stay up late at night...I liked to sleep.

- He preferred sloppy... I liked to keep my space clean.
- As we grew older, he made friends easily ...it was harder for me

- His first car was a Corvette...mine was a Volkswagon

- He joined the Air Force...I joined the Navy

Our careers took very different paths.

Years passed quickly while we raised our families. As our kids got older and more independent, Dick and I began to reconnect. As many of you know, to talk to Dick by phone while he was working at the boatyard, you had to be willing to share your call with several other people at the same time... on hold, back again, on hold, back again...he had a great skill to multitask, but phone calls were often short, and sometimes challenging and downright painful.

But the common thread that brought us back together was a mutual love of aviation and a passion for flying. As we found ourselves with a little extra time from work and family, we both pursued our interest in flying by building our experience, ratings and skills in many different aircraft.

The best times I had with Dick were when I had him all to myself in the cockpit of an airplane. There I could pick his brain and learn so much from his incredible knowledge of the mechanical side of these flying machines. I would occasionally pilot him in my flying machines, and he would do the same for me. These were incredibly fun times. We shared many hours on the phone as he got closer to retirement and we made plans to continue our adventures in flying. But those plans were cut short.

Dick’s tragic death is a great loss to all of us. He was a wonderful man. He was a great flying companion. We became each other’s source of inspiration and motivation to keep flying and dream of new ventures.

Dick would not want us to morn his death. He would want us to celebrate his life. He has a new co-pilot now. He’ll sit in the left seat and fly as long as he wants with fair winds and blue skies. He’s gone West “not alone into the sunset but into the company of friends who have gone before him.” I will miss him deeply. A part of him will live inside me forever.

Condolence: So sad to learn of Dick's passing. I first knew him when I was a teenager working at Pierce Marine and he was always patient, kind and willing to share his experience and knowledge to assist. Over the years, whenever i visited with him we would share some laughs and talk boats.
Condolences to all the family. Thinking of you from across oceans.

Condolence: I was very sad to hear of Dick's passing. I have known Dick for 15 years as I've done business with him in his role as Boatyard Manager. My experience of Dick was that he was knowledgeable and exacting. He'd go out of his way to help us. I regret that longstanding plans have my family out of town all weekend, and so I will miss the opportunity to pay my respects in person. I'll miss him!

Condolence From: Tim Walter
Condolence: As the previous owner of Martin Walter Co. I had many dealings with Dick at Boothbay Region Boatyard. As a fellow pilot, it was always great also to talk airplanes and flying with Dick. A gentleman, thoughtful, intelligent, and caring - Dick was a man of excellent character. We mourn his passing and extend our sympathy to his loved ones.
